How growth mindset can help children become leaders, and insights from the BB&T Leadership Series.
Thank you BB&T for sponsoring this post.
Instilling a growth mindset in our kids is incredibly important. This way of viewing ability and potential gives kids the right frame of mind to work hard, believe in themselves, and accomplish their goals. These are all skills that leaders possess, and in raising kids with a growth mindset, we can raise them to become leaders. The BB&T Leadership Series highlights such leaders. Check out one of these leaders, Manny Ohonme, below.
An Inspiring Leader and Role Model for Kids
Growth mindset is highly important in raising leaders. This allows children to believe in themselves and what they want to accomplish, as well as to believe and encourage those that they are leading. The BB&T Leadership Series shares insights on leadership topics from some of today’s best and brightest leaders. Here is a glimpse into the BB&T Leadership Series where Emmanuel Ohonme, shares his insights on leadership.
In the video above, Emmanuel (Manny) Ohonme recounts the time a missionary came to his village when he was a boy. He was approached and asked to enter into a contest in which he could win a pair of free shoes. For this young boy, like many others, the chance to own a pair of shoes was beyond his wildest dreams. Determined to make a difference in the world, Manny went on to devote his life to this cause and started Samaritan’s Feet in 2003. Through Samaritan’s Feet, he has the opportunity to continue the legacy of love, hope, and inspiration that he received that day he won his first pair of shoes when his life was changed.
There are a couple of key takeaways from the BB&T Leadership Series video that I want to highlight and share with you:
Manny discusses overcoming obstacles and that it is an important part of becoming a leader. To me, this is a critical component as it is also a result of operating with a growth mindset. Understanding that your abilities and accomplishments are not fixed and that through hard work they can be achieved is wonderful. But, being able to apply that mindset in the face of an obstacle or challenge is critical for perseverance and true leadership. Manny also discusses how you can use obstacles as a vehicle to better answer others’ prayers.
Striving to make the world a better place. I love that both Manny and the BB&T Leadership Series have this as their ‘why.’ Setting a goal like making the world a better place and applying a growth mindset to that make for an unstoppable and powerful force.
Manny’s desire to inspire future leaders. There was a section of the video where Manny discusses the missionary that came to his town when he was a child. That missionary inspired him to do great work. There are many scenarios in which that encounter may never have taken place, but it did. And, because of that, Manny has gone on to touch the lives of millions, all because of that missionary. The snowball effect is real here. And it will continue on as Manny inspires all of the children that he is touching to go and make the world a better place as well.
Using Growth Mindset to Inspire Young Leaders
Dr. Carol Dweck has researched the impact of one’s mindset on their performance and effort. Her findings show that those with a growth mindset believe that abilities can be developed, whereas those with a fixed mindset believe that abilities are fixed and therefore less likely to achieve.
This has become very important work for teachers and parents alike as we think about the kind of mindset that we inspire in our own children. We want kids to know that through hard work and effort, they can accomplish wonderful things.
Summary
Like Manny and so many other wonderful leaders in the world today, we can inspire our own kids to become future leaders. We can instill a growth mindset in them by believing in them and teaching them to believe in themselves. We can show them that hard work and effort pay off, and that ability is not fixed. We can inspire them to go out and change the world just as Manny has done in touching the lives of so many.
